SANFORD, Maine — Denise Neal returned to her home on Twombley Road and sensed that something was up. She could smell it.

The house had “an extreme paint smell,” she said.

Even stranger, the food pantry was … clean. Organized. Neal and her husband, John, had been meaning to tackle that room for years.

As Neal looked over the pantry — and wondered what exactly was going on — a woman she had never met before seemed to come out of nowhere and introduced herself as Amy Santin, the general manager of the Old Navy clothing store in Newington, N.H.
